The following is a list of the utilities on our 'PC Tech' disk. We have tried some of them out and some are very useful indeed. Many are shareware or evaluation copies, and some are freeware. Most can be downloaded from the various download sites on the Internet. Most are now out of date, though still quite useful.

mdmgraph - Modem Monitor Graph 1.4

Online graph displays dial-up network traffic with statistics showing current send/received, maximum sent/received, totals, transfer rates and best rates. 

uptime - Puppet's Uptime Monitor 1.0a

This program keeps track of the following information: Current uptime, Longest uptime, Number of reboots, Number of crashes, Date of last reboot, Date of last crash, Days since last reboot, Days since last crash, and CPU usage. Currently, the CPU usage meter does work under NT. 

killcmos - KiLLCMOS32 1.0

Basically "resets" your computer's CMOS settings to the factory defaults. It works with ALL CMOS. KiLLCMOS32 only changes checksums & values that makes the motherboard CMOS revert back to factory defaults. Removes forgotten CMOS BIOS passwords as well. Better than draining that battery!!

 wfall - Waterfall Pro 1.01 (Shareware)

A powerful utility which monitors your PC and decreases your CPU temperature. It is ONLY cooler which increases your chances of a successful overclocking by using CPU Throttling to prevent your CPU from overheating. 

fastvid - FastVid 1.10

A utility which enables P6 "Write Combining" on Pentium Pro and Pentium II systems.The result is far better performance in graphics programs such as 3D games or professional rendering software. Speedup can be as high as 100 %. 

winzip - WinZip 7.0a (Shareware)

The long awaited arrival of WINZIP 7.0 is here!!! It allows users to download and open archives from the Internet with one click via Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. There is no need to Save to disk and then switch to WinZip or to the Windows Explorer or File Manager to open the downloaded file. In addition, all files that have been downloaded are automatically copied from the Internet Browser's temporary folders to a folder of the user's choice; this ensures that a permanent copy of the download is saved on the user's system, even if the downloaded file is automatically deleted by the browser. WinZip 7.0 also features an updated zip/unzip engine with automatic built-in disk spanning support for multi-disk Zip files. If you create a zip file on diskettes and the first diskette fills, then disk spanning is automatically activated, and you are simply prompted to put in a new diskette to continue the archive. There is no need to specify that you want to span before you start. 

pkzip - PKZIP for DOS

Great compression/decompression utility for DOS 

spinrite - Spinrite

Utility for checking the actual parameters of a hard drive, not what the CMOS thinks they are. This utility is very useful on older machines. You must have a partition on the hard drive for spinrite to work.

Bla - BootLog Analyzer

Looks at your Windows95 BOOTLOG.TXT file and calculates the time taken to load each driver etc, in order to help in locating any cause of lengthy boot-up times. The displayed result can be sorted by loading duration, filtered to show only those items with long durations or which reported failure, and saved to a text file. 

memturbo - Memory Turbo

Get that "just-booted" feeling with a single keystroke! The safe, easy, and effective way to increase your system performance. Defragments physical RAM, recovers RAM from the operating system and applications, recovers leaked memory, and fine-tunes file caching to your specific usage scenarios. Does NOT use compression, nor does it install any drivers or VxDs, or anything outside of its own directory. 

Cacheman - Cacheman 3.6

When your system runs out of RAM, Windows starts to use virtual memory instead of flushing the disk caches. To change this, you have to edit the "system.ini" file. Cacheman is a GUI-based tool used to optimize the cache settings and change the aforementioned INI file. The result is much better system performance on most systems due to the reduced use of the swap file. 

Freemem

FreeMem Standard enables you to gain control over your RAM. You can allocate and free any specified amount of memory, which makes Windows 95/98/NT operating systems swap out unused programs and DLLs. The effect is that you get more free RAM, which makes working a lot smoother. It also displays a graphical chart of the amount of free physical RAM you have on your system. 

easymtu

EasyMTU is a free Windows 95 program that optizes your TCP/IP settings for your dial-up adapter (MaxMTU, MaxMSS, DefaultTTL, and more). Windows 95 has default settings for TCP/IP that are not optimal for your modem, with packet sizes that result in a slowed-down Internet connection. These settings are stored in the registry and can be modified, only it is difficult to find the right key to modify. EasyMTU searches for the TCP/IP protocol binded to your dial-up adapter and changes only these settings, so other elements of your registry (like your network adapter) are unaltered. It has a simple, automatic calculating option and the possibility to add your own registry keys. 

aol - Stay On

Utility to keep AOL from disconnecting you during idle time. 

h99clean - Happy99 Virus Cleaner

This program will safely remove the Happy99 virus from your machine and (if applicable) show you a list of email addresses that you sent the virus to. 

strikeout - SrikeOut & BackOff

Scan & remove back orifice and netbus from your computer right now! 

solomons - Dr Solomons Anti Virus Toolkit

The classic Dr Solomon Toolkit has only been vaialble as a costly shareware program, now available FREE for a limited period. Version 7.91 for Win95/98 is the full blown professional edition, no demo, no registration required, and will work forever. The world famous anti-virus tollkit is available FREE now. 

autorun - Autorunner

A generic Autorun program. Use it as a custom menu on your CDs. A new frontend for creating the menu is included. Autorunner has a nice customizable GUI. Support for custom Sound and Graphics and Support for any language. 

sleepy - Sleepy 2.1

Automatically shuts down your computer at a specific time on specific days of the week. Great for people who stay up too late fooling around on the computer and want to break the habit! Polite features include disable option at startup and warning before shutdown. No pesky icons or windows while it's running. New version 2.1 includes options for password, restart, and other features & fixes. 

batch - Batch Creator 1.0

A tool for making the creation of MS-Dos Batch files easier than ever before. It takes care of the most common commands and formats the, correctly for you as well as letting you add commands that aren't supported or simply by typing them in. 

rescue - Rescue 2.0

This is a recovery program that is extremely powerful! It is fully functional and easy to use. It will backup and restore the following files: Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Command.com, IO.sys, MSDOS.sys, Protocol.ini, System.da0, System.dat, System.ini, User.da0, User.dat, Win.ini,should a corruption happen. It also has an install and uninstall program with instructions. 

dskspeed - Diskspeed32

A 32-bit multi thread programs that read hard disk sector by sector, measure reading time and plot graphic dependence hard disk reading speed from track number. Useful for testing your hard disks. Display partitions space distribution on disk. 

cdspeed -CDSpeed32

A 32-bit multi thread programs that read CD-ROM sector by sector, measure reading time and plot graphic dependence CD-ROM reading speed from sector number. Useful for testing your CD-ROM drive and CD-ROM disks 

ontrack - OnTrack Data Advisor

Diagnostic software assesses the health of your hard drive and memory, identifying potential problems that could lead to data loss. It is self-booting, so it is able to run from a diskette even when your system cannot boot. It analyzes file structures, evaluates drive capacity, checks boot sectors, reads the Master Boot Record, cross-checks partition tables and CMOS, checks the system memory for errors, and performs a thorough virus scan. partman - Partition Manager 2.37

Partition Manager - create, delete, resize partitions. Format and resize FAT-16 and FAT-32 file systems. Advanced Boot Manager - select active partition at the boot time, boot from the second hard drive. Hide/unhide partitions. Create up to 31 primary partitions on a single hard drive. Detect boot viruses. 

eraser -Eraser 2.1

Consists of several utilities built on top of a powerful file wiping library capable of securely removing sensitive data from your hard drive - a standard wipe utility, a convenient Explorer shell extension and a scheduler which allows you to program the erasing of unused disk space or, for example, cache files to happen regularly, at night, during your lunch break, at weekends or whenever you like. 

suredel - Sure Delete 1.2

When you delete a file, it's contents remains on your hard drive and can easily be recovered. Prevent this by using Sure Delete on your files instead of just deleting them. Sure Delete the rewrites the file with randomly picked junk, renames it, and deletes it using the special command to by pass Recycle Bin and leave it unrecoverable to 99.9% of data recovering apps. 

fwheel - Freewheel

xnetstat - X-Net Stat

Will monitor and show information on your current Internet connections. Information shown includes the local port being used for the connection, the remote port, the remote hostname, the protocol used and the status of the connection. Quick and easy way to see exactly who is connected to your computer.

NetMon - NetMonitor

NetMonitor is small program which monitors TCP/IP connections to your machine. Meant for systems administrators who wish to keep track of access to a machine, it can also be useful in network programming or troubleshooting. Basically a graphical version of netstat.exe' which ships with win95/98/nt, it has the added advantages of constantly refreshing its display as well as logging capabilities. 

tcpview - TCPNetView

NetLab - NetLab 1.4

whois - Whois That

whoisca - WhoisCA 1.2

WhoisCA is a whois network utility for the whole .ca (Canada) domain. 

snmptrap - SNMP Trap Watcher

Designed to be used to receive SNMP Traps from network equipment, including routers, switches, and workstations. Traps are sent when errors or specific events occur on the network. Using the 'Decode Window', and double clicking on a specific Trap, a full decode of the Trap can be displayed. This option is more useful for debugging Network equipment which is in the early stages of development. In normal circumstances, SNMP Traps would only be of interest to Network Managers or System Administrators. 

ispeed - iSpeed 2.7.3
